This year’s Grand Prix season is turning into one of the most exciting yet as the drivers and teams prepare for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on Sunday (13 June 2010). Already five different Formula One drivers have crossed the line first in only seven races – two each from Jenson Button and Mark Webber plus Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and most recently Lewis Hamilton in the Turkish Grand Prix.
After a year’s gap, it is nice to see the Canadian Grand Prix back on the Formula One circuit. The track itself is on an island on the St Lawrence River in Montreal. The new fuel consumption rules though could cause problems as racing here guzzles it up. Virgin will be glad they have at last got a redesigned car with a bigger tank but all teams will be watching the meters closely as the race progresses.
Turkey also saw another improved performance from Michael Schumacher who came in fourth though it was clear his Mercedes still does not have the power to match the Red Bulls and McLarens. Unless there is a dramatic improvement, the Mercedes team look like they will be battling it out for third place with Ferrari.
That leaves Webber narrowly in the lead in the drivers championship but his Red Bull team are a point behind in the constructors table to Hamilton and Button’s McLaren. But Hamilton has to thank the impatience and inexperience of Vettel for his first win of the season in Turkey after Vettel collided with his team mate Webber when Red Bull looked set to take the top two places. The move put Vettel out of the race and relegated Webber from first to third.
