The Valencia street circuit, home to the European Grand Prix until 2014, is not the most popular track on the Formula 1 calendar. Fans decry the lack of overtaking opportunities, while drivers point to the circuit’s unique challenges, but without any of the passion evident in discussions of Montreal, Monza, and Monaco.

• Surely the most memorable European Grand Prix was that in 1993 at Donington Park. The race started in soaking wet conditions but that was no bar to the mighty Ayrton Senna. The Brazilian started fourth, dropped to fifth and then passed Michael Schumacher, Karl Wendlinger, Damon Hill and Alain Prost to seize the lead by the final corner of lap one. By the end of the race he’d lapped all but one car and finished a minute ahead of second-placed Hill.
• The 1997 race in Jerez was equally memorable but for less heroic reasons. Michael Schumacher led the title battle by a point going into the weekend and during the race he infamously collided with Jacques Villeneuve. But while Schumacher’s race ended, Villeneuve carried on to win his only title. Schumacher was later deemed to have run JV off the road and was stripped of second place in the Championship
