The wait is over, NASCAR 2010 has arrived! Tonight, a new decade of stock car racing begins with the 32nd running of the Budweiser Shootout. CBS first broadcast the Daytona 500 in 1979, and that's the year the Bud Shootout began. Back then it was called the Busch Clash, and Buddy Baker won it, leading 18 of 20 laps and banking $50,000. Now the race has a new sponsor, a new format, it's longer, the stakes are bigger, and the qualifications are different.
There have been several different formats over the years.
-From 1979-1990, the race was 20 laps.
-In 1991, the race was split into 2 10-lap segments, and the overall winner was determined based on the best average finish of the 2 "heats."
-In 1998, the Busch Clash became the Bud Shootout, and was extended to 2 25-lap segments, which was preceded by a last chance qualifier.
-In 2001, Budweiser decided to put their full name on the race, and it was expanded again to 70 laps.
-In 2003, the race was broken into 2 segments again, a 20-lap and a 50-lap segment separated by a 10-minute pee break.
-Last year, the first segment was expanded to 25 laps.
